Personal Branding

Personal Branding - what is it?  Officially, it’s the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands (self-packaging).  Unofficially, it’s more or less what we used to call Reputation (what people think and say about you when you’re not in the room).  The thing is, times have changed and although historically people could only experience you face to face, they can now connect with you online without ever meeting you in person.  As a result we all have to be aware that, whether we want it or not, we have a personal brand that we need to define and manage if we want it to be a success.

So why should we be bothered?  Nobody says you have to be, but the days of a job for life are slipping away at speed and a personal brand can go a long way to boost your prospects and professional standing.

If somebody googles your name, what will they find?  The outcome of that search is your current online personal brand so it’s worth finding out.  If it doesn’t portray you in the way you were hoping, all is not lost and a bit of tweeking will get you on the right track.

Start off by determining how you want people to think of you – your image, personality, qualities, and expertise.  This is your goal and it should only be based on authentic characteristics/be a true reflection of who you are (building a brand based on something that isn’t the real you would be incredibly hard to sustain).  Everything you share via social media from that point forward should strengthen this image.
